Tara’s Story

”Due to unexpected circumstances, I became mostly financially independent at about 14 years old. I worked full-time as a waitress during my high school years and summers to help make ends meet. Then I continued working full-time while on full need-based financial aid at Yale to support myself through college. And while I learned a bit about budgeting and how to make a $20 bill stretch to impossible lengths through the school of hard knocks, I had never been formally taught how to make smart financial decisions for the future, how to put my hard earned money to work, or protect myself from financial risk.

It wasn’t until I started working on Wall Street that my eyes opened to another financial world: one where individuals have the knowledge and tools they need to make smart financial decisions that are aligned with their goals. I knew I had to do something to make that world accessible to people like my friends and family. So I left Wall Street, and created LIT in order to provide the Personal Finance 101 course I wished I had had to other young adults.

Empowering the next generation - especially FGLI students like me - to take control of their finances is a great responsibility and honor. Seeing students #getLIT and become more confident with money is an absolute joy. I hope you’ll allow us the privilege of serving your students too.”
